With the changing times, it is imperative to equip the B. Tech (Dairy Technology) graduates with management skills especially in production, finance, marketing, human resources, co-operatives, information technology, resource management, and dairy farm and plant management. The department offers 13 different courses with a total of 27 credits covering all the aspects of management required for the dairy and food industry. The graduates are to be capacitated in terms of entrepreneurship, extension and soft skills which enable them to become exceptional managers, technical supervisors, extension officers and entrepreneurs. The department of Dairy Business Management of the college is mission to bring out the concealed potential of the students in critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, team building and all other management aptitudes required for their personal and social development. The department is equipped with Computer lab, Animal Nutrition lab and Extension facilities. Apart from offering courses to B. Tech and M. Tech, the department also gives services to farmers to establish farms, testing of feed materials and need based extension advisory services.
The Department of Dairy Husbandry started functioning in the year 1993. The aim of the Department is to advance and apply the knowledge on Dairy Husbandry activities for the welfare of farmer community in Kerala. It has a well set up laboratory facility including the nutritional and microbiological analysis of milk, feed and fodder. Other than handling the regular class room lectures, the faculty is well versed in demonstration and extension activities related to all aspects of dairying. The Department extends services in formulating balanced economic rations, setting up of farms and fodder units, rearing of cattle, breeding etc.
The department is intended not only for teaching, but also to take up activities relating to transfer of technology and field oriented surveys, short term and long term trainings and research activities.
The college provides a well equipped computer centre with internet access which helps the institute to perform and document its functions with ease and equip the students to become truly global competitors.
Department of Dairy Chemistry is a professional and smooth functioning facility offering 17 credits to the B.Tech program (Dairy Chemistry) and it also offers M. Tech program since 2017. The Department possess a well-equipped laboratory for the undergraduate/Post graduate and Research students. The Department has exclusive Laboratory for instrumentation, Dairy Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Quality Control and Dairy & Food Analysis. It handles many number of research projects, the results of which will serve the common man. The Department has an exclusive centre for testing milk and milk products which will facilitate the public/farmer to test the milk products at any time at a reasonable rate. The centre provides Quality Awareness programmes for all the stake holders to create awareness among the public. The faculty is always updated on the recent trends in Food, Dairy sector by attending conferences, seminars and the knowledge acquired will be transferred to students, farmers, entrepreneurs and all those associated..
Dairy Engineering Department is one of the major departments of the College of Dairy Science & Technology, offering 35 credits in B.Tech (Dairy Technology). The department is having laboratory facilities for Process Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning etc., while the students are also given practical training for various engineering courses in the University Dairy Plant, which is a well-developed processing centre handling more than ten products and having all the essential product manufacturing equipment and utilities. A good engineering workshop and a spacious drawing room also exist for the conduct of engineering courses. The department is also having a harmonious relationship with various industries in this sector, and also provide guidance to entrepreneurs with respect to the mechanization of food processing operations.
Department of Dairy Microbiology is a major contributor towards the academic and research excellence of this college which offers 17 credits in B.Tech (Dairy technology). The department has started from 2017 onwards offering M.Tech programme in Dairy Microbiology. The department owns well-equipped under graduate and post graduate laboratories. The department also possess, Dairy Food Quality & Safety Laboratory, Pathogen Handling room, Sterilization Room, Molecular Biology Laboratory, and Starter Culture Laboratory that are competent enough to address any academic, research and extension activities. The maintenance and supply of dairy starter cultures for the public and research purposes at a nominal price is a noteworthy contribution of this Department. The department is carrying out several projects in the area of starter culture and fermented dairy products. The department moves forward with the vision of nurturing the students into competent dairy professionals capable of contributing effectively and responsibly to the society.
Dairy Technology department is the major department in the College of Dairy Science & Technology, offering 11 courses with 33 credits for B.Tech (Dairy Technology) under graduates, besides Experiential Learning Programme with 10 Credits and In-Plant Training with 20 credits. The department is also offering M.Tech. (DT) Post Graduate programme with 55 credits since 2012. Current faculty status includes the Professor and Head (In-charge), three Assistant Professors (two on contract basis for one year) and Teaching Assistants. The department is having laboratory facilities such as Dairy Technology, Food Technology, Sensory Evaluation, Rheology and Product Characterization, Packaging, Fine Instrumentation and Post Graduate (Research laboratory). Students are given practical exposure regarding processing of milk for manufacture of dairy products in the University Dairy Plant. Full-fledged Experiential Learning Unit is available in the department for conducting Experiential Learning Programme. Two-stage spray drier, double effect falling film evaporator and many other sophisticated types of equipment are installed. The department also provides Hands on Training for farmers, small-scale entrepreneurs and students on preparation of different dairy products and also research facility for external students..
The University dairy plant was commissioned in 1993. It is a student experimental dairy processing unit where graduate and post graduate academic programs of dairy and veterinary faculties are supported. It is established with the prime intension of providing practical training in the area of milk processing and preparation of various milk products. Practical classes for the various Dairy Technology and Dairy Engineering courses are conducted here. Moreover research work is carried out by post graduate students from other universities. Dairy plant is offering different training programs like stipendiary training, sponsored training and hands on trainings. Consultancy is offered to entrepreneurs in different aspects of dairy processing. Large number of visitors especially school children are exposed to different technical activities. Plant is equipped with facilities for pasteurization and hygienic packing of milk and for the production of various milk products. The dairy plant also undertakes short term training courses and extension activities.
